ANTON\u00cdN DVO\u0158\u00c1K \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Cello Concerto in B minor, op. 104<\/strong><\/p>\n

Anton\u00edn Dvo\u0159\u00e1k (1841\u20131904) set out to compose the Cello Concerto in New York, completing it in Bohemia in 1895. Enthusiastic about the work, Brahms said, \u201cHad I known that one could write a cello concerto like this, I would have written one long ago!\u201d In tribute to his dying first love (his sister-in-law), Dvo\u0159\u00e1k included in the third movement a quotation of her favourite song of his, \u201cLeave Me Alone\u201d.<\/p>\n

    Dvo\u0159\u00e1k composed the \u201cNew World Symphony\u201d in 1893 while he was the director of the National Conservatory of Music of America. From the outset, he sought to give the work an American feel, with references to Black and Native American musical traditions (such as pentatonic scales and melodies), melding it with contrasting music from his native land.<\/p>\n
