It is more than likely that instrumentation for a relatively small orchestra was attractive to Ravel to allow the work to be performed more widely, so it should come as no surprise that the Fugue and Toccata were omitted from the piece, the former perhaps for structural reasons, the latter probably due to the instrumentation required. In terms of its content, the Fugue is more reminiscent of the music of some form of consort from the middle ages, while the Toccata demands a large ensemble by its very nature.\u00a0 <em>(Zolt\u00e1n Kocsis)<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>SERGEI RACHMANINOV: Symphonic Dances<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>Symphonic Dances, bearing the opus number 45, is Sergei Rachmaninov\u2019s last work and was composed between 22 September and 29 October 1940. However, it draws in part on music conceived a quarter of a century earlier. In 1915, the composer determined to write a ballet entitled \u2018The Scythians\u2019 , and although the plan never bore fruit, some musical ideas survived from the early drafts and found their way into the Symphonic Dances. During composition, Rachmaninov gave his new piece the working title of \u2018Fantastic Dances\u2019, but he later rechristened the work having learned of Shostakovich\u2019s 1922 work \u2018Three Fantastic Dances\u2019. At the same time, the movement titles of \u2018Noon\u2019, \u2018Twilight\u2019 and \u2018Midnight\u2019 also fell by the wayside. The work, now with its final title, was premiered by Jen\u0151\u00a0 \u2018Eugene\u2019 Orm\u00e1ndy as conductor of the Philadelphia Orchestra on 3 January 1941.<\/p>\n<p>The Symphonic Dances not only draws upon the uncompleted ballet \u2018The Scythians\u2019, it also features elements of Russian folk music and Latin and Orthodox ecclesiastical choral music, and we can even detect the influence of Rimsky-Korsakov\u2019s <em>The Golden Cockerel<\/em>\u00a0 behind the main section of the first dance. The movement is closed by the characteristic fatalistic motif from Rachmaninov\u2019s own first symphony. There is perhaps a similarly intentional reference concealed in the unmistakable waltz-like character of the second dance, which cannot fail to remind the listener of Tchaikovsky, but more serious musical scholars will also note fragments of several Kazakh folk songs (which were certainly familiar to Rachmaninov) among the motifs of this movement. The ecclesiastical melodies of the third movement mentioned previously appear in the third movement: following the confluence of Orthodox song with the Dies irae, it is as if the finale were announcing the triumph of faith over death. It was in this era that he composed <em>Variations on a Nursery Tune<\/em> (op. 25) between 1913 and 1914, the success of which continues unbroken today.\r\n\r\nThe introduction to these variations of children\u2019s songs composed for piano and orchestra is earnest and grows increasingly dark and incandescent. It is almost the sound of a drama of global proportions waiting to unfold; or perhaps the building anticipation of a new ode to joy. Instead, we hear an innocent little tune (\u201cTwinkle Twinkle Little Star\u201d) that can be played as a child does with a single finger, mocking every form of false sincerity and revealing an ancient and oft-forgotten truth through the power of art: the art of music \u2013 if its creator so wishes \u2013 is nothing but a game. A genuine and pleasing, humorous game. This is Dohn\u00e1nyi\u2019s <em>ars poetica<\/em>.\r\n\r\n<em>Variations on a Nursery Tune<\/em> may reveal more about Dohn\u00e1nyi and better reflect his identity as an artist than the handful of recordings of his piano playing. The composition written in 1914 is characterised by gleaming clarity, unparalleled mastery of his craft and superior virtuosity. It is clear that this music does not light the way to the future, nor has it ever done so. Yet it is a veritable treasure trove of innovations in instrumentation, individual harmonic creativity, and the refined art of scoring music for different parts. And, above all else, of humour. \u201cFor the enjoyment of humorous people and for the annoyance of others,\u201d the eternal prankster wrote above the score. He graduated from the Franz Liszt Music Academy, where his teachers were Istv\u00e1n Lantos and Zolt\u00e1n Kocsis. In 1985, he won the special Cziffra Foundation Prize at the Hungarian Radio Piano Competition. After this, he became known primarily as a Liszt specialist. He has performed in Austria, Brazil, France, Croatia, German, Italy, Canada and the United States. In almost two decades the National Philharmonic Orchestra underwent renewal. After the death of Zolt\u00e1n Kocsis, the Ferenc Liszt Award-winning Zsolt Hamar held the post of Musical Director at the Hungarian National Philharmonic from March 2017 to August 2020.
