FERENC ERKEL: Hunyadi L\u00e1szl\u00f3 \u2013 overture<\/strong><\/p>\n

Hunyadi L\u00e1szl\u00f3, the first masterpiece of the Hungarian national style of opera which ingeniously combined the language of French and Italian operas with the verbunkos musical elements of the late 18th century, was premiered at the Hungarian National Theatre in January 1844. The libretto was written by B\u00e9ni Egressy, who also set the Sz\u00f3zat to music, and the opera achieved enormous success: in the 40-year period before the Budapest Opera House opened, it was performed some 250 times, and according to a critic of the time, “emits Hungarian spirit from the beginning to the end, and in musical terms it is really quite significant”. The 33 year-old Ferenc Erkel presented the main motifs of the work’s distinctive scenes in the overture, which became a beloved piece in the concert repertoire thanks to its atmospheric and instrumental colour, its daring changing of tones, and the work’s superb structure. The piece, which compresses the plot into a quarter of an hour, begins with the raw sound of a trumpet, and then advances to the stormy music of V\u00e9rpadk\u00e9p, as well as the Bossz\u00fak\u00f3rus and, naturally, the theme of “Meghalt a Cselsz\u00f6v\u0151”, which became a hit.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

L\u00c1SZL\u00d3 DUBROVAY: Cello Concerto<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/strong>In addition to the orchestral wind and string instruments in L\u00e1szl\u00f3 Dubrovay’s Cello Concerto, composed in 2012, the work also demands a folk percussion section, a harp, and a celesta. The formal structure of the three-movement composition follows classical models: the first movement is a sonata, the second is a trio, and the third is written in a rondo form. In the main theme of the opening movement, a sharply dissonant wind fanfare, like a detuned, grotesque version of Beethoven’s ‘fate motif’, strains against the sliding melody of the solo cello. The lyrical theme, first heard on the bassoon, is followed by the child-like, playful closing theme. In the main part of the second movement, the tightly controlled, weeping theme is accompanied by a mournful, foreboding drumming. The trio’s lyrical cello melody, in the words of the composer, “guides us into a different, transcendent world.” In the energetic, eventful finale, the composer gives a grand opportunity for the virtuosity of the soloist to shine.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/strong>BOLDIZS\u00c1R CS\u00cdKY: Transylvanian Rhapsody<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/strong>Boldizs\u00e1r Cs\u00edky was born in T\u00e2rgu Mure\u0219 in 1937, and graduated from the conservatory in Cluj-Napoca, also in Romania, in 1961. He spent 40 years in a leadership role at the Philharmonic Orchestra in T\u00e2rgu Mure\u0219, the last ten years of which he spent as director of the institution. He has worked in nearly every musical genre, and his works have been performed in many European countries, as well as in the United States and Japan. Among his main professional awards are the Bart\u00f3k-P\u00e1sztory Award, the Georg Enescu Award, the Ferenc Erkel Award, the award of the Union of Romanian Composers, and most recently, the Pro Cultura Hungarica prize. He is an honorary citizen of T\u00e2rgu Mure\u0219, and has received an Officer’s Cross of the Order of Merit of Hungary.<\/p>\n

He wrote the Transylvanian Rhapsody in 2012, and it premiered in the same year with the T\u00e2rgu Mure\u0219 Philharmonic Orchestra, led by the\u00a0conductor Gh. Costin from Timi\u0219oara. The orchestra of the Hungarian National Philharmonic performed two of the composer’s orchestral works \u2013 with the outstanding Zolt\u00e1n Kocsis as conductor \u2013 in their Hungarian premieres, but this piece strikes a more ‘popular’ tone than the gloomy “Gulag” or the tense winter poem “A Hegy” (The Mountain). The Rhapsody is full of intensely polyphonic phrases and the unique tension of contradictory, simultaneously overlapping melodies. It’s not uncommon for the ‘spectacular’ instrumentation or the chorus-like, inward-turning sections to go to extremes.\u00a0 Calling the piece a “Rhapsody” is justified by its alternating of contradictory atmospheres, and the accompanying frequent changes in tempo. In terms of its musical language, the piece uses the identity and significance of a musical mother tongue understood through the spirit of Bart\u00f3k’s expression. The composer, without referencing any particular folk songs, clearly shows where he belongs through the spirit of his music.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

ZOLT\u00c1N KOD\u00c1LY: H\u00e1ry J\u00e1nos \u2013 suite<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/strong>The narrative poem by the reform-era poet J\u00e1nos Garay provides the basis for Zolt\u00e1n Kod\u00e1ly’s opera, which premiered in 1926. Through this work, authentic Hungarian folk song and the folk music derived from were incorporated into the genre of musical theatre. The nostalgic stories and adventures of the Hussar of Nagyabony, known for his outlandish claims and endless story-telling that evoke a world of fairy tales, provided the perfect platform for the 43-year-old composer to introduce the delightful diversity of Hungarian folk songs. The suite created from the opera lines up the most exciting scenes and musical moments in succession, revealing a remarkable dramaturgical sensibility. 2024. m\u00e1rcius 15-i nemzeti \u00fcnnep\u00fcnk alkalm\u00e1b\u00f3l \u00e9rt\u00e9kteremt\u0151 tev\u00e9kenys\u00e9g\u00e9nek, valamint a m\u0171v\u00e9szeti k\u00f6z\u00e9letben v\u00e9gzett munk\u00e1j\u00e1nak elismer\u00e9s\u00e9\u00e9rt j\u00e1r\u00f3 legmagasabb magyar \u00e1llami kit\u00fcntet\u00e9sben, Kossuth-d\u00edjban r\u00e9szes\u00fclt.<\/p>{:}{:en}Gy\u00f6rgy Vashegyi<\/strong> earned a degree in conducting studies at the Budapest Academy of Music in 1993. His interest in historical performance was greatly influenced by Helmuth Rilling, John Eliot Gardiner, John Toll, Malcolm Bilson and Simon Standage.\r\n\r\nVashegyi has been a regular guest conductor for several Hungarian symphony orchestras and the Hungarian State Opera since the year 2000.\r\n\r\nHe founded the Purcell Choir and the Orfeo Zenekar in 1991 and has been responsible for countless important opera and oratorio productions, as well as cantata and orchestral programmes.\r\n\r\nHis name is associated with dozens of contemporary world and Hungarian premieres, while he has also released some 30 albums with his groups. Since 2014, he has developed a close relationship with the Centre de Musique Baroque de Versailles, releasing the following French Baroque recordings through the Glossa music label: the world premier of Rameau\u2019s Les F\u00eates de Polymnie \u2013 Ballet h\u00e9roique<\/em>; the album Mondonville: Grands Motets<\/em>; a world premiere of Isb\u00e9<\/em>; the opera pastiche Un op\u00e9ra pour trois rois<\/em> and a theatrical performance of Rameau\u2019s Nais<\/em>.\r\n\r\nVashegyi has taught at the Academy of Music since 1992 and is currently an associate professor. He was awarded the Liszt Award in 2008 and the Knight\u2019s Cross of the Hungarian Order of Merit in 2015, and has been a member of the Hungarian Academy of Arts since 2013 and its president since October 2017.\r\n

Az \u0151sbemutat\u00f3t k\u00f6vet\u0151 \u00e9vtizedekben ugyanis t\u00f6bb r\u00e9szt kompon\u00e1lt hozz\u00e1, illetve v\u00e1ltoztatott meg vagy h\u00fazott ki az oper\u00e1b\u00f3l Erkel. A 2000-es \u00e9vekben a Zenetudom\u00e1nyi Int\u00e9zet munkat\u00e1rsai r\u00e9szletekbe men\u0151en rekonstru\u00e1lt\u00e1k az eredeti m\u0171vet, amelynek \u0151sv\u00e1ltozata is bemutat\u00e1sra, illetve r\u00f6gz\u00edt\u00e9sre ker\u00fclt. A zeneszerz\u0151 \u00e1ltal vez\u00e9nyelt premier ut\u00e1n a korabeli sajt\u00f3t megosztotta Erkel m\u0171ve, a k\u00f6z\u00f6ns\u00e9g azonban azonnal a sz\u00edv\u00e9be z\u00e1rta. A nyit\u00e1nyban felcsend\u00fcl\u0151 virtu\u00f3z fuvolasz\u00f3l\u00f3t Doppler Ferenc j\u00e1tszotta, aki fiv\u00e9r\u00e9vel, Doppler K\u00e1rollyal egy\u00fctt kor\u00e1nak \u00e9s a Nemzeti Sz\u00ednh\u00e1z zenekar\u00e1nak kiemelked\u0151 fuvolam\u0171v\u00e9sze volt. Nemcsak Erkel \u00edrt a Doppler-testv\u00e9rek sz\u00e1m\u00e1ra ma is neh\u00e9z technikai k\u00f6vetelm\u00e9nyeket t\u00e1maszt\u00f3 sz\u00f3l\u00f3kat, hanem \u0151k maguk is kompon\u00e1ltak egy\u00e9nileg \u00e9s k\u00f6z\u00f6sen is a hangszerre, amellett, hogy Liszt Ferenccel kar\u00f6ltve r\u00e9szt vettek az orsz\u00e1g els\u0151 hivat\u00e1sos zenekar\u00e1nak, a b\u00e9csi mint\u00e1ra alakult Filharm\u00f3niai T\u00e1rsas\u00e1g Zenekar\u00e1nak megalap\u00edt\u00e1s\u00e1ban.\u00a0\u00a0 Ismert t\u00e9ny az is, hogy a szabads\u00e1gharc katon\u00e1i t\u00f6bbek k\u00f6z\u00f6tt a Meghalt a cselsz\u00f6v\u0151 indul\u00f3 zen\u00e9j\u00e9re\u00a0 mas\u00edroztak. \u00c1m, ami enn\u00e9l is fontosabb, hogy\u00a0 szabads\u00e1gharc ut\u00e1ni \u00e9vekben nemzeti oper\u00e1b\u00f3l a Nemzet Oper\u00e1j\u00e1v\u00e1 magasztosult a Hunyadi L\u00e1szl\u00f3. 1850-ben Szil\u00e1gyi Erzs\u00e9bet szerep\u00e9ben a kor \u00fcnnepelt francia szopr\u00e1nja,\u00a0 Anne La Grange l\u00e9pett fel vend\u00e9gk\u00e9nt. Az \u0151 tisztelet\u00e9re eg\u00e9sz\u00edtette ki m\u0171v\u00e9t Erkel a h\u00edres, neh\u00e9z technikai k\u00f6vetelm\u00e9nyeket t\u00e1maszt\u00f3 La Grange-\u00e1ri\u00e1val. De a partit\u00fara nem k\u00e9sz\u00fclt el id\u0151ben, \u00edgy a bemutat\u00f3 cs\u00faszott p\u00e1r h\u00f3napot \u00e9s v\u00e9g\u00fcl 1926. okt\u00f3ber 16-\u00e1n val\u00f3sult meg. A k\u00f6vetkez\u0151 \u00e9vadra Kod\u00e1ly \u00e1tdolgozta \u00e9s kib\u0151v\u00edtette darabj\u00e1t. Moszkv\u00e1ban az operah\u00e1z egyik ottani vend\u00e9gszerepl\u00e9se alkalm\u00e1val ker\u00fclt sz\u00ednre. K\u00fclf\u00f6ldi sz\u00ednh\u00e1zakban nem tudott reperto\u00e1rdarab lenni, de Kod\u00e1ly 1927-ben az dalj\u00e1t\u00e9k legjellegzetesebb dallamaib\u00f3l \u00f6ssze\u00e1ll\u00edtott egy hat t\u00e9teles zenekari szvitet. She received a first-class degree from the Academy in Budapest in 2007, as well as gaining further qualifications in 2007 and 2008 at the City of Basle Music Academy, where she was a student of Ivan Monighetti. In September 2009, she began working as a teaching assistant at the University of Debrecen.\r\n\r\nSince her teenage years, Rohmann has regularly performed across Europe as a chamber musician and soloist. She has given countless concert performances both in Hungary and abroad. In 2008, she also won an award at the 2008 Orpheus Festival in Zurich alongside the Finnish pianist Anna Kuvaja. Ditta performs with both chamber and symphony orchestras and has also featured on countless albums and radio recordings. Her repertoire ranges from the Baroque era to contemporary music. The era marked by the name of J\u00e1nos Ferencsik and Kobayashi Ken-Ichiro was followed by a new chapter in the history of the orchestra when in 1997 Zolt\u00e1n Kocsis became general music director until his death. In almost two decades the National Philharmonic Orchestra underwent renewal. After the death of Zolt\u00e1n Kocsis, the Ferenc Liszt Award-winning Zsolt Hamar held the post of Musical Director at the Hungarian National Philharmonic from March 2017 to August 2020. He previously worked with the orchestra as its first permanent conductor and built up an impressive international career.\r\n\r\nThe Orchestra is one of the top interpreters of the work of B\u00e9la Bart\u00f3k, and the albums of the Bart\u00f3k New Series<\/em> have won numerous accolades in Hungary and abroad. The orchestra perform not only classics but also numerous other important works previously missing from the repertoire, many of which require a large orchestral apparatus. It attaches great importance to introducing contemporary Hungarian works to the audiences. It has given many popular chamber music concerts and hosted events for young people.\r\n\r\nThe orchestra\u2019s concerts have featured world-famous soloists and conductors. It supports young musicians recently embarked on an international career. In recent decades, the National Philharmonic Orchestra has appeared in the greatest venues and festivals around the world, including the Avery Fisher Hall in New York, the Suntory Hall in Tokyo, the Birmingham Symphony Hall, the Megaron in Athens, Bozar Centre in Brussels, the Enescu Festival in Bucharest, the Beethoven Festival in Bogot\u00e1, as well as the Colmar and Canary Island Festivals.
